Different fields of design are closely interlinked in large-scale design projects. Successful design operations require extensive understanding of systems and excellent cooperation between all operators in the design fields.
The design and implementation of technical systems for demanding infrastructure projects requires highly diverse competence. It is important to be able to converse with all of the project’s stakeholders, understand the dependencies between the project’s different technological fields and conceptualise the project as a whole, from field devices to enterprise resource planning and from an individual design task to the goals of the entire project.
The conceptualisation of the big picture, in particular, plays an important role in design projects. Even so, it should be noted that the desired state of large-scale systems has multiple levels and that it should allow simultaneous management from several perspectives and on a number of levels of precision. So, while the design must, of course, be managed as a whole, the project manager’s needs in terms of design management differ from the needs of a designer responsible for an individual process, for example. In other words, a design project cannot be managed successfully from a single point of view or on a single level.
